Dementia is associated usually with older adults over 65. Majority of Early Onset Dementia according to the Alzheimer’s Association occurs between the ages of 40 and 50. There is no one test that can confirm for Alzheimer’s Disease. But in the more early-onset Dementia, there are several etiologies to investigate including heavy metal toxicity, mold infestation and other considerations in environmental medicine. Other causes of early onset can include genetics, also known as ‘Familial Alzheimer’s Disease.’ Though rare, familial disease can develop symptoms in people as early as their 30s and 40s. A proper thorough history will be required, looking for any changes to memory and cognitive challenges, as well as objective cognitive testing and neurological exams. Though the symptoms of Early Onset Dementia is very subtle and vague, there are some common symptoms. Signs to look out for to consider when discussing with your healthcare practitioner: ► Forgetting things often, including small trinkets such as keys, wallet, or forgetting events ► Difficulty finding the way to a familiar place, or feel confused as to where they are. Some may forget why they go to a specific location such as the living room in the first place. ► Difficulty finding the right words, or using the wrong words, making sentences that one may not understand. ► Challenges with managing and dealing with finances ► Difficulty making proper judgment, such as dressing up appropriately for the weather ► Changes in mood and behaviour, rapid mood swings without reason ► Loss of ability to do everyday tasks If you notice yourself or a loved one that they’re exhibiting a lot of these symptoms, it is best to bring them to a physician or provider to get it checked.
